The Science

What's in your shower water

Across the US, tap water is disinfected with chlorine or chloramine so it's safe to drink. That's a good thing for your health, and a hard thing on hair and skin: chlorine strips the natural oils that keep hair soft and skin comfortable. On its way to your bathroom, water also picks up rust and fine particles from pipes.

How Velvet Shower filters it

Water passes through two filtration stages before it reaches you.

1. Sediment cartridge. Housed in the handle, it traps rust, sand and fine particles. You can see it work: the cartridge goes from white to rust-brown as it fills.

2. Calcium sulfite disc. Housed in the head, it neutralizes chlorine. Calcium sulfite stays effective in hot water, which is exactly what you shower in.

3. Micro-perforated plate. A fine plate spreads the filtered water into an even, comfortable spray.

Why the filter needs changing

Filter media works by capturing and neutralizing. Over time it fills up, so we recommend a fresh set every two months for one or two people. With a subscription, it arrives on its own.
